Mood Cup Craft!

Happy July!

It's been raining the past few days in New York City and it has me feeling all sorts of moody. Summer rain is a bit like emotions. One minute it is the BOOM CRASH of thunder and lightning and the next it's yellowy sun and rainbows. It can be really difficult to process through your emotions as an adult and even more difficult when you're little. Emotions can seem like big, scary clouds of confusion. I think healthy conversations about emotions is always helpful. Encourage your little that feeling angry, sad, silly, confused, and happy are all very valid ways to feel. Today, I have a simple craft called "The Mood Cup" that might help with tackling all your little's emotions.

What You'll Need:

  1. 2 Cups (*I used red solo cups because I strangely had those on hand. Paper cups would be best, but if you are working with a plastic cups like me, make sure it's softer plastic like that of a solo cup because you will be cutting a square hole in one of the cups.)

  2. 1 Piece of White Paper

  3. Markers

  4. Scissors

  5. Tape

Step 1: Grab one of your cups and cut out a 2 1/2 inch square in the center of the cup. (*May need adult help/supervision on this step as kid scissors probably won't cut through the plastic of the cup.)

Step 2: Cut out 4 2 1/2 inch squares from your piece of paper.

Step 3: Tape your 4 squares evenly around the center of your other cup.

Step 4: Cut out a small piece of paper and tape it above the "cut out square" and cut another small piece of paper and tape it below the "cut out square".

Step 5: Above your "cut out square", write "Mood" and below your "cut out square", write "Of The Day".

Step 6: Pick 4 emotions and draw/color the faces of those 4 emotions on your squares.

Final Step: Stick your cup with your faces inside your cup with the "cut out square" and spin the inside cup, placing the emotion you are feeling for the day inside the opening.

I hope this will be a fun craft that allows your little to process through emotions in a simple way. Sometimes it is hard to find the words to describe the way we are feeling. Pictures can sometime bring to light what's happening internally.

Be well and Be Kind To Others!
